Newcastle find out result of Vurnon Anita red card appeal

With Newcastle trailing 2-0 in the final stages of  Saturday’s match, Vurnon Anita was sent off after a tackle on one of the visiting players.

Fans at the match were amazed when a red card was produced, with a belief that they must have missed an earlier yellow card for the Dutchman, as surely it couldn’t have been a straight red.

That though proved to be the case and after the match Rafa Benitez also expressed his amazement, stating that he didn’t even think it was a foul.

The United boss also said that the club would appeal the decision and the three match suspension, a suspension that would see Vurnon Anita miss:

20 September Newcastle v Wolves (League Cup)

24 September Aston Villa v Newcastle (Championship)

28 September Newcastle v Norwich (Championship)

Vurnon Anita had been the only Newcastle outfield player up to that point, to have started all eight NUFC Championship matches this season.

Tuesday has seen the FA panel hear the appeal and their decision was that the red card will stand and the player misses these three games.

Official FA Statement:

Three Game Suspension for Anita

A claim or wrongful dismissal regarding Vurnon Anita has been unsuccessful, following an Independent Regulatory Commission Hearing.

The Newcastle player was dismissed for serious foul play during the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 17 September 2016.

The player’s three match suspension, therefore, remains in place.
