Newcastle 2 Wolves 0 – Tuesday 20 September 7.45pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Leazes Park Ender:

“File this one under professional performance.

“After Saturday’s reverse, which was a poor show, this cup victory is very welcome indeed. Serene progress in this competition so far.

“Take another bow Yoan Gouffran. Rafa may have blundered leaving him out at the weekend because the guy is on fire this season. His rejuvenation continues. He’s a must start if fully fit, on this form.

“Changes at full-back were expected tonight and it seemed to go quite well, albeit Wolves had also made some changes.

“A key save from Darlow in the first half and cracking opener from fans’ favourite Matt Ritchie. It’s been a good night.

“I’m all for squad rotation but maybe Rafa needs to have a major think about Villa on the weekend.”

Nat Seaton:

“Great to win another cup game – last 16 here we come.

“So different to Saturday and two class goals.

“Credit Rafa, credit the players and glad we got the chance to right Saturday so soon.

“Bring on the Villa.”

Jamie Smith

“A good reaction to Saturday, although given the choice of winning one of this Wolves double header, I’d have taken the league points.

“Hopefully back in gear and a few more squad members getting integrated bodes very well.

“Happy with a return to form, while any designs on winning this cup are the stuff of daftness, another steady home draw would be welcome to keep the squad ticking over and momentum rolling.”

Paul Lyon

“Pretty flat game and atmosphere sparked to life by Matt Ritchie.

“He personifies exactly the type of player we need to get promoted. Thought Yedlin did well too.

“Happy the be in the hat for the next round!”

Jamie Swan

“Little bit of vice-versa. Lovely.

“Loads of changes from Rafa and unlike in years gone by under Pards and Shteeeeve, not to the detriment of the team and no tame surrender. Fancy that!

“Nufc were much, much better tonight and normal service was resumed – clean sheet and Lionel Richie donning his magic effing hat again! What a buy he’s been.

“In me heart of hearts I wish we’d had the three points Saturday gone but a Cup run would be bloody marvellous.

“Diame much better, Murphy ruffled feathers and what about Gouffran bursting the net AGAIN?  I’ll have a pint and a half of what he’s on please barman!

“Rafa loves facts, NUFC are in the last 16 (for a pleasant pigging change) FACT.

“TOON TOON!”

George Stainsby:

“Back on the horse.”
