It was a second start for Adam Armstrong at Barnsley on Saturday, the Newcastle striker on loan at Oakwell until January.

The 19 year old came on as a substitute for his first appearance and scored the Championship goal of the weekend to give Barnsley a win over Preston.

He followed that up with his first start in a Barnsley shirt as his loan club won 4-0 at Wolves last Tuesday, though he didn’t get on the scoresheet.

However, he scored another cracking goal on Saturday, an excellent right foot volley from outside the box (watch it below) against Reading.

Luckily for Newcastle fans, Reading were already two goals up and the match ended in a 2-1 win for the visitors.

I say lucky because Barnsley with the help of Adam Armstrong are proving to be a surprise package of the Championship so far and if Armstrong’s goal had proved the winner on Saturday they would have gone three points clear of Newcastle United.

It was recently revealed by Preston boss Simon Grayson that Newcastle made clear they were only prepared to loan Adam Armstrong to one of three Championship clubs, Barnsley or one of the two others to be promoted from League One last season.

The thinking being that none of these clubs would be competition for the promotion places.

Obviously early days yet and a along way to go in the Championship but a new experience for Newcastle fans.

Whilst there have been more and more loans made in recent seasons by Newcastle, it is the first for a long time where the player is competing for a team in the same division.

With two goals in 188 minutes of Championship football so far, Adam Armstrong is showing every indication that he will be taking the progression from 20 goals in League One last season to the next level in his stride.
