Murphy wins battle of Newcastle strikers – Watch his excellent late header here
It was the battle of the Newcastle strikers on Monday night – Aleksandar Mitrovic v Daryl Murphy.
Serbian hosting Ireland in an important first group match in qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The two players will be waking up this morning with very contrasting memories to take from the match.
Mitrovic started the game whilst Daryl Murphy watched from the bench, that though was where the positives ended for the Serbian striker.
Jeff Hendrick scoring after only three minutes to rock the home team and Mitrovic struggling badly to have any impact on the game.
Subbed after an hour, Mitrovic then watched on as his team scored two goals in quick succession through Kostic and Tadic, to seemingly give the Serbs a vital and confidence building home win.
However, with 14 minutes remaining Daryl Murphy replaced goalscorer Jeff Hendrick and after only four minutes on the pitch he produced a quality headed finish (watch it below) to a corner from Robbie Brady.
Obviously a big moment for both Murphy and the Ireland squad but a special celebration for the Newcastle striker, his first international goal in 23 attempts (10 starts and 13 sub appearances).
All the goals and highlights below but go to 4.05 to see the Daryl Murphy goal.
