Dwight Gayle is topping the Championship goalscoring stats as we move into October.

Three players have scored seven Championship goals – Dwight Gayle, Bristol City’s Tammy Abraham (on loan from Chelsea) and Scott Hogan who plays for Brentford.

However, when it comes to minutes on the pitch, the Newcastle striker leaves the other two trailing.

After his dramatic hat-trick against Norwich, Dwight Gayle has now scored a goal every 99 Championship minutes, then next best if Abraham with one every 109 and Hogan one every 129 minutes.

There will be some Newcastle fans wondering just what that average would be if Gayle had taken a few more of the numerous chances that came his way on Wednesday night.

Newcastle play bottom club Rotherham on Saturday, surely a perfect chance for Gayle to get that average even further down.

All eyes will be on what team selection Rafa Benitez makes, with the overwhelming choice of fans being to give a Gayle/Mitrovic its first chance in a starting eleven for Newcastle.
