Little doubt that Rafa Benitez will have attempted to keep his players grounded this week.
A 6-0 away win is bound to get the team’s blood pumping and they will be desperate to put in a similar performance in front of the Newcastle fans.
With only a handful of tickets remaining on Friday lunchtime, the Newcastle v Wolves game will be watched by a full house at St James Park tomorrow.
A remarkable average now guaranteed of somewhere north of fifty thousand for these first four Championship matches of the season.
Rafa Benitez though was today once again all about keeping expectations tightly controlled, although he did proudly declare ‘We have a City behind us’.
How good does that sound!!!
The United boss confirmed that recent signings Achraf Lazaar and Daryl Murphy are two players almost certain NOT to be playing on Saturday, indicating that instead they are likely to get their first chance on Tuesday night in the League Cup…against Wolves.
Rafa’s message is for everybody to stay ‘focused’ and that no one is ‘better than anyone before the match’, you have to show it by the players’ actions during the game.
Rafa Benitez speaking at his pre-Wolves press conference:
“We have a City behind us.
“This is the Championship. It’s a tough competition and we have to be ready for the next game. We have to respect the opponent.
“The team can still improve and play better. That doesn’t mean to score more goals but control the game and play well.
“Wolves are not a bad team. They are doing well and it will be totally different to what people are expecting.
“We are not better than anyone before the match but we can be better than a team on the pitch. We have to be focused.
“It is always impossible to keep everybody happy – we have the cup on Tuesday and we have to change players.”
