Aston Villa fans haven’t had much to shout about this season, with only one win in all competitions they are desperate for some positivity.
When better than when Newcastle United visit on Saturday teatime?
The pathetic behaviour of thousands of Aston Villa fans in May 2009, set in motion a friction between the two sets of supporters which shows no sign of going away any time soon.
When Newcastle made an instant return to the Premier League you couldn’t have written a better script, as NUFC stuffed Villa 6-0 in their first home match of the season.
With the two clubs both managing to get relegated at the same time after a few years of trying, being thrown together in the Championship has ensured the antagonism will continue this season.
So what do the Aston Villa fans make of Saturday’s upcoming match – win, lose and still holding Newcastle supporters in high regard?
Here are a range of views taken from top Aston Villa fans message board Heroes & Villains:
‘Wonder if our banner man has got one ready to drop down if we beat them.’
‘I’m being entreated by the media to act as if this is a derby game.
The Newcastle fans who wait outside the away end to have a pop causing agro to start between us and them are suggesting I treat this as a derby game.
I found relegating them again, just as hilarious as the first time of asking.
So why not? If ever the “it’s going to click” argument was the bear fruit, then this is the game. 4-1 Villa, and you can f*** off as well you fat, Coventry, horse neglecting c***(Mick Quinn).’
‘Please God, win this game.’
‘They really do hate us, I think any other club in the country (maybe apart from Liverpool) would have long forgotten the ‘incident’, take themselves far too seriously them Geordies do.’
‘Who knows which way this one will go with Football and Championship the way it is. Not sure whether being the home team improves our chances or not.
They will be eager to atone for the Wolves result. Hopefully the crowd can be a big ally on our side, but I gotta be honest, last week was probably only a blip for them.
We have a lot of work to do. 0-1 to them.’
‘At least with this match people might not be predicting a walloping of the opposition – so less pressure on the players compared to previous? I’ll take any psychological boost.’
‘We will smash them.’
‘We’re such a dysfunctional club we might well miraculously scrape a win, but that would make me happy, and evidently that’s not why Aston Villa exist on this earth.
More misery / frustration beckons.’
‘I have much more time for Sunderland. I don’t believe I am the only Villa with this train of thought.
Newcastle seem to have assembled a good side so our players will have to be up for this scrap on Saturday (and our fans also need to create a cauldron of Villa support). I have to say I would be elated if we beat them.’
‘I really worry for this one. It would not be fun at all to lose this, and I think we might well lose it badly.
That said, we might absolutely f*** them if the forwards can get it to work. It’s an outside hope, but it’s all I‘ve got.’
‘I reckon 2-0 to the barcodes I hope I’m wrong.’
‘I think this will be different to our home games so in that Newcastle won’t sit back meaning they may be easier to break down.
Whether our defence will cope at the other end is an entirely different matter.’
‘Sorry fellas, no way we win this one.
I don’t know how anyone can vote for or expect a win with our current form.’
‘This could actually suit us more than the other games this season. I’d expect Newcastle to be far more attack minded than most of our opposition. They’ll take the game to us.
We look decent defensively (when we don’t do something stupid). I’d like us to utilize our pace on the counter a bit more.’
‘Obviously a really tough game.
But we’re undefeated at home and have come nowhere near that being threatened. I’d say that for more than half of our minutes at home we’ve been really excellent too.
So let’s not do ourselves down too much.
They’re the best team in the league but they’re not f***ing man citeh.’
‘3 wins from our last 45 league games.
We must be due a win, 1-0 the Villa.’
‘If that stat is 100% accurate we’re doomed I tell you!’
‘It is accurate, although if you add on an extra league game it takes it to 4 wins from 46.
That’s a 2% increase in our win rate. Every little helps.’
‘Really looking forward to this game – I’ve got nothing against Newcastle personally, but the “little grudge” they have against us just adds spice to this fixture.
I know they’ve got higher attendances than us over the last few years, but, bigger club than us ? – Never.’
‘F*** the f***ers (Geordies). Lets tear them apart.’
