Aston Villa 1 Newcastle 1 – Saturday 24 September 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle:

Nat Seaton:

“We threw the win away.

“Should have had it won by half-time – we were so dominant in the first half but faded badly as the game went on.

“A real feeling of disappointment as we leave Villa Park, almost feels like a loss – how times have changed!

Jamie Smith

“Lucky to get a draw in a game we should have put to bed before half-time.

“Equaliser was coming from  a mile off and lost track of the amount of corners we invited them to attack with.

“On balance by no means a disaster but it’s starting to feel a bit like we used up all our goal scoring power at QPR.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“First half domination wasted and it proved costly.

“The promotion push is juddering.”

Paul Lyon

“How have we not beat them and sent their awful fans home with another defeat to ponder?

“Frustrated to have to nervously watch the last 20 mins or so, having dominated the majority of the game.

“Game should have been put to bed in the first half really and we would have, had we put our chances away.”

Jamie Swan

“Don’t think I could be more pi**ed off than now after watching us toss away twi points. Think Rafa will be swinging Spanish windmills in the dressing room.

“Shouldn’t be left to feel that way as the lads first half were tremendous and we should have been out of sight.

“I cannot believe we missed the type of chances we did. Diame’s miss was ridiculous. Gayle’s one on one miss was a kick in the spuds too.

“As soon as Yedlin came off and Tiote came on we were ragged and giving free-kicks and corners away like Milky Bars.

“The inevitable happened and I suppose credit to Villa for sticking at it, but we let them back in.

“Shelvey was excellent again and I thought Hayden, Clark and Yedlin played great.

“ But the elephant is still in the room…and flapping it’s ears like Sels at crosses. Even Lascelles screamed at him after his first half flap.

“He’s dodgy and today would have been a great opportunity to put Darlow in again.

“Feels like a defeat but positive signs. But we now need to sort the SJP form out and turn the Canaries over.”

James Rutherford:

“Two points dropped but not the worst result in the world.

“Should have been out of sight in the first half.

“Thought Ciaran Clark was VERY impressive against his old team and Yedlin had a solid game too.

“It all seemed to go wrong when Tiote came on…”

George Stainsby:

“Nearly. Funny week.”
