Two Newcastle players called up for World Cup qualifier v Malta
Newcastle United duo Matt Ritchie and Grant Hanley have been called up for Scotland’s vital game against Malta.
The World Cup qualifier is to be played on 4 September 2016 and the United pair are part of a 27 man squad.
The only one of the home nations to miss out on the Euros this summer, Scotland are desperate to make up for that with a successful World Cup qualifying campaign.
As well as Matt Ritchie and Grant Hanley, there are another 11 Championship players named in the squad, meaning that half of the group are from the English second tier.
Matt Ritchie has made a great start to life on Tyneside and although he had a quieter game at Bristol City, in all three previous matches the former Bournemouth winger was United’s best player.
Ritchie has ten caps for Scotland, whilst Grant Hanley has played 23 times.
Hanley started at Fulham in place of Chancel Mbemba who was lacking fitness but hasn’t made a start in the last three games.
