Rafa Benitez and Jonjo Shelvey see international break a little differently

Interesting to hear what both Rafa Benitez and Jonjo Shelvey had to say about this international break.

Newcastle on a run of four wins on the bounce but now not playing until Derby County away on Saturday 10 September (5.30pm kick-off).

Both manager and player were interviewed after the 2-0 win over Brighton, asked whether good or bad thing that international break was happening now.

Rafa saying he would take the positives and it would be a great chance to ‘relax’ and ‘we will enjoy’ the rest.

However, Jonjo Shelvey gave us an insight into what is probably more the reality and shows the intensity and hard work that Rafa Benitez expects from both himself and his players.

Shelvey saying that it is good to have ‘a break and recover’ but that the reality is ‘the gaffer’s not really too keen on days off’ and that the players will be doing just as much work on the training ground as is usually the case.

Great having a manager as personable and charming as Rafa when interviewed, just like Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby before him.

However, just like that pair, the current Newcastle boss also twins that with a total commitment to hard work and desire behind the scenes with the players and the expectations of them.

Rafa Benitez asked if international break is good thing, or whether would have preferred to keep momentum going:

“I will take the positive from the situation…

“So we will relax, we will enjoy, and we will be ready for the next game.”

Jonjo Shelvey asked the same question…:

“Yes in one way would like to try and keep that momentum going but in the Championship the games do come thick and fast, so probably good to have a break and recover.

“Having said that, the gaffer’s not really too keen on days off…so I’m sure we will be on the training pitch a lot of the time in this international break.”
