Rafa Benitez has admitted that he has turned down two offers for star player Ayoze Perez.
The Spaniard has been in great form as top scorer in pre-season and playing through the middle, usually behind the more mobile (than Mitrovic) Dwight Gayle, he has looked a far better player than last season when he was often played wide left.
Rafa insists he doesn’t want to sell Ayoze Perez and has praised the former Tenerife player’s contribution, saying Perez has worked hard and that even though he was offered a ‘good price’, he knocked it back.
However, Benitez says that with Moussa Sissoko, if Newcastle get the ‘right offer’ then he will sell the midfielder. The United boss admitting that it isn’t a good idea ‘to keep players if they are not happy’.
Rafa Benitez talking to the BBC:
“This year we have received two offers (for Ayoze Perez).
“We don’t want to sell him.
“He has been working very hard during the summer, he is doing well. Directly, one coach calling me, asking for him, with a good price to be fair.
“We are still looking for two or three players, if it is possible, as we know that we need something, to give a little bit more balance.”
On Moussa Sissoko:
“We will try to do the best for us, if he has to go because we have the right offer, fine.
“If he stays with us, fantastic. We are doing what we have to do to protect Newcastle United and to help Moussa Sissoko, the professional.
“If he goes because we have the right offer, it has to be good for the club too. Sometimes it is worse to keep players if they are not happy.”
