The Newcastle v Cheltenham match date has been revealed by the visitors, as they ask their fans to ‘save the date’.

Cheltenham Town say that they don’t have ticket details as yet but have been informed that the EFL Cup second round tie will take place on Tuesday 23 August at 7.45pm.

Tradition has always been that Sunderland always played home midweek matches on Tuesdays and Newcastle on Wednesdays. Although for some unknown reason Newcastle did play at home to Northampton on a Tuesday night at this same stage of the competition.

Northumbria Police have always insisted that the two clubs didn’t clash with match dates wherever possible.

With Sunderland at home to Shrewsbury that same week, it remains to be seen whether they keep to their usual day and the matches clash, or switch to the Wednesday.
