Adam Armstrong headed out on loan to Barnsley on Tuesday night and now young defender Jamie Sterry has joined Coventry until January 2017.

Newcastle United official statement:

‘Newcastle United full back Jamie Sterry has joined League One side Coventry City on loan.

Sterry will stay at the Ricoh Arena until Tuesday, 3rd January 2017.

The 20-year-old made his first start for the Magpies in last week’s 2-0 EFL Cup victory over Cheltenham Town at St. James’ Park.

Sterry also put pen to paper on a new four-year contract with United last week, as did fellow Academy product Adam Armstrong – who scored 20 goals while on loan at Coventry last season.

And Sterry – who will team up with ex-Magpie Gael Bigirimana in the Sky Blues’ ranks – could now make his debut for Tony Mowbray’s men in their League One clash at Fleetwood Town on Saturday.’

Rafa Benitez explaining last Friday why likes of Armstrong and Sterry have to go out on loan:

“We extended the contract of Aarons, Armstrong and Sterry, because we want to be sure that these young players will be here and grow with us.

But he (Adam Armstrong) knows that we’ll sign an experienced striker and has been in contact with some clubs that can maybe take him on loan.

“I think he’s doing well and has the confidence that he can do well, but the problem when you are in the Championship and you want to go up quickly is that you need experience.

“If you have young players you know that they have the talent but maybe it’s not the right time – they need more experience and then they can give what they have all season.”
