Newcastle set to move for Callum Paterson – Reports

Newcastle United are looking to bring in Callum Paterson according to reports this morning.

The 21 year old right-back was recently the subject of a £600,000 bid by Wigan which was rejected.

Arriving at Hearts as a 16 year old, Callum Paterson was converted from being a striker to play right-back, although he has also turned  out up front and in midfield for the Edinburgh based club on occasion.

Paterson was named yesterday alongside Matt Ritchie and Grant Hanley in the Scotland squad to face Malta in two weeks time and made his international debut alongside the (now) Newcastle pair, when the Scots lost 1-0 to Italy in a pre-Euros friendly in May.

A bid of around £1m is reported to be what it will take to land the defender but the Scotsman claim that Rafa Benitez wants Callum Paterson to start off with the Newcastle Under 23s if he does sign him.

Although only due to turn 22 in October, Paterson has already played almost 150 first team games and would be an interesting acquisition.

After going without any significant Scottish presence at Newcastle United for some time, the drop to the Championship and Rafa Benitez’ appointment has already led to Ritchie and Hanley arriving, as well as Stuart Findlay who was released by Celtic.
