Shrewsbury Town Manager Micky Mellon has been glowing in his praise for on loan striker Ivan Toney.

The Newcastle forward helped set up the winner in midweek when Shrewsbury (ironically) defeated Huddersfield Town (included seven in the team who also started at St James Park) and then he impressed even more when making his first start at the weekend.

Playing at Coventry in a 0-0 draw, Ivan Toney almost won it but saw his effort come back off he crossbar.

Despite not getting on the scoresheet, Mellon said about Toney after the game ‘We worked so hard to get him here for all of the reasons you’ve seen’.

Describing Ivan Toney as a ‘top, top, player’, the Shrewsbury Town manager is sure the striker is set for a very productive time on loan, especially once he gets him proper support on the pitch.

Micky Mellon talking about Ivan Toney:

“The thing is that you have to remember is that he’s a Newcastle United player and they paid a lot of money for him, he’s a top, top player…

“He’s got that pedigree and I’m delighted that we got him here. We worked so hard to get him here for all of the reasons you’ve seen.

“He’s definitely added to the group and when AJ (Leitch-Smith) comes back and the other additions we’ll have more different threats at that end of the pitch so it’s looking well.

“I think we got a wee bit more support to him in the second half. He got a wee bit isolated because we were a bit pinned back.”
