Newcastle United have reached agreement with Ipswich Town for the transfer of Daryl Murphy.

Sky Sports have just confirmed that a transfer fee has been agreed between the two clubs for the 33 year old forward.

Sky’s man in the north east Keith Downie, says that the transfer has been pushed through after daryl Murphy forced the issue by putting in an official transfer request.

***This is something below that I wrote and which went up on The Mag in the last hour – presumably Daryl Murphy will definitely not be named in today’s Ipswich team!

(***Just checked at 2pm and sure enough, Daryl Murphy is not named in the 18 man Ipswich team and subs today)

Article published Saturday 27 August – 1pm:

It was five weeks ago when Newcastle United were linked with former Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy.

It looked a little unlikely and one of any number of players Rafa Benitez is claimed to be interested in.

However, the last 24 hours have seen the Daryl Murphy stories resurface and many people have tied them in with comments from Rafa on Friday.

The Newcastle boss confirmed that he was going to be bringing in ‘an experienced striker’ and that Adam Armstrong had been informed of this and was now talking to a number of potential loan clubs.

Rafa Benitez Friday 26 August:

But he (Adam Armstrong) knows that we’ll sign an experienced striker and has been in contact with some clubs that can maybe take him on loan.

The Newcastle boss has already shown that strict age constraints are a thing of the past with 31 year old Jesuz Gamez arriving on a two year deal, so on age alone you couldn’t rule out Rafa thinking about 33 year old Daryl Murphy.

Able to play on both the wing and through the middle, Murphy’s versatility would also be an asset, plus the absence of Gayle and Mitrovic for Brighton has pointed to the lack of striking options, with not many fans seeing Ayoze Perez as an out and out forward.

Saturday lunchtime has brought further claims, with Daryl Murphy supposedly being left out of the Ipswich squad for today’s home match against Preston, with a Newcastle move set to go ahead. With Murphy having started all four of Ipswich’s Championship matches this season, we await that news at 2pm with interest…

Brought over from Waterford United, Daryl Murphy had limited success in his four years on Wearside, although 10 of his 15 Sunderland goals came in the 2006/07 Championship season for them.

After a disappointing few years at Celtic, the striker/winger has really came into his own at Ipswich Town, over the course of these past three seasons Daryl Murphy has scored 50 goals (27 in 2014/15) in 117 Championship starts (+8 as sub).

Daryl Murphy has also benefitted on the international scene due to his Championship form, the Ipswich player playing against both France and Italy for Ireland at this summer’s Euros.
