Newcastle 1 Huddersfield 2 –  Saturday 13 August 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Nat Seaton:

“One decent move in the whole 96mins which resulted in a poor header by Ritchie.

“I thought last week was an average display but today was even more disappointing.

“Early days but plenty of work for Rafa to do to get an improvement out of these players – starting on Wednesday night….”

Paul Lyon:

“Quite literally had the wind taken from our sails (flags).

“There’s too much wrong with that performance to list here but from what I’ve witnessed so far, it seems that our squad hasn’t gelled nor adjusted to life in the Championship.

“Unless things improve soon I fear it’s gonna be a long hard season.”

Jamie Smith:

“Absolutely gutted.

“For all my well earned cynicism I honestly thought this was the point where United no longer ruined my weekends.

“ We are still trying to stifle and break in a league where most teams are opportunistic battering rams who will see us as a scalp.

“An attacking game plan and a more direct formation would be far more likely to gain rewards.

“Gayle was utterly isolated up front and other than his (fortunate) goal I don’t remember a single effort on goal.

“This team needs to learn lessons and move forward but I fear that today illustrated that we must bring people in if this season is to avoid turning into a nightmare.

“A left sided midfielder and a striker would be the bare minimum, although our failure to defend the Terriers attacks makes me worried about our perennially dodgy defence.

“Also, anyone hoping Mitrovic will eradicate any problems up front is putting too much on one player and ignoring his relatively poor goals return last year.

“Possibly the worst part of today for me was seeing a scumbag pinching a Gallowgate flag and throwing a gobful of abuse at my mate when he pulled them about it.

“One thing to be ashamed of the team’s showing but another to see the fans let each other down, this piece of sh*t stealing something his fellow fans had dug into their pockets for.”

James Rutherford

“Is it May yet?

“Different league, same old sh*te.”

Leazes Park Ender

“Another really bad day. Players at fault. I feel like we’re in an alternate reality.

“Well done to Gallowgate flags. That looked great.

“Much work lies ahead for Rafa. Promotion? Don’t ask.”

Jamie Swan

“Just sh*te, that’ll do.

“Pretty much covers it all.

“Upwards and onwards.”

George Stainsby:

“Matt Ritchie changed the game for us, but the self destruct button…”
