Jamaal Lascelles ‘I feel like we’re ready…We know what we’ve got to do’

Jamaal Lascelles says that pre-season isn’t just a case of getting players fit, it is all about the players making sure they are picking up good habits.

Despite describing it as a ‘nice feeling’ to have four wins and a draw in the friendlies, there is one bone of contention for the former Forest defender.

Whilst scoring 17 goals (14 different scorers) at one end in the five friendlies, the biggest negative has clearly been the defending from set-pieces.

Jamaal Lascelles says that he doesn’t like conceding any goal but that those from set-pieces are especially damaging.

With Championship teams sure to target corners and free-kicks as a source for many of their goals, Newcastle need to improve on the shambles we saw at both Doncaster and against Vitesse Arnhem.

However, overall the current Captain (in all five friendlies) sees a very positive outlook for Newcastle and thinks that the squad are ready for the challenge and ‘know what we have got to do’.

Jamaal Lascelles talking to the official club website:

“Pre-season isn’t just for fitness, you have also got to make sure you are doing the right things and our results would suggest that we have been.

“It’s a nice feeling to have been unbeaten going into the season and I feel like we’re ready.

“The boys are sharp, we are all raring to go and if we continue like we have been in front of goal then it could be a very exciting season.

“Vitesse were a different type of opponent to what we have faced so far in pre-season, playing much more in front of us and very much to feet, but I thought we dealt with it well and took our goals fantastically.

“I was really pleased with the first half but quite disappointed with the goals we conceded in the second half.

“As a centre-half it’s not nice to concede any goal but especially from a set-piece (watch the goals HERE and see Jamaal Lascelles reaction to conceding first Vitesse goal).

“We are going to analyse it, go over what we need to do and correct it ready for Fulham on Friday.

“We know what we’ve got to do and we’ve got to get things right. We’ve got high standards and want to be as good a team as we can, so it is important that we get things right.”
