Dwight Gayle will ‘smash it in the Championship’ for Newcastle this season.
That is the opinion of Gayle’s former team-mate, one-time Crystal Palace cult hero and captain Paddy McCarthy, who has just left Palace after eight years at the club.
McCarthy says there is ‘no doubt about it’ when it comes to how Dwight Gayle will perform and as for betting on him to be top scorer in the Championship, he says ‘stick your mortgage on it.
“Dwight Gayle will smash it in the Championship next year, no doubt about it.
“Good bet (Championship top scorer) if you ask me pal. Stick your mortgage on it.”
When asked previously about why he left Palace for Newcastle, Dwight Gayle gave two special reasons – his new manager and the fans he was looking forward to playing in front of.
“Rafa Benitez is a great manager and has great experience.
“There is expectation but under the manager here I believe he can help me to perform.
“There’s a great history at Newcastle – I’m looking forward to getting this club back in the Premier League and proving a few people wrong.
“There was other interest but the opportunity of playing at Newcastle in front of 50,000 is a great one.
“It’s great for a player to have the support behind them, it gives you that extra strength. It was the best thing for me and my career.”
