By my reckoning there have been some 16 different Newcastle managers in the Premier League era.

Not bad going when you consider that there have been only 22 Premier League seasons that have included Newcastle United.

However, maybe a bit of a surprise to learn that 7 of those 16 Newcastle managers, also feature in the Top 20 Premier League managers in terms of most ever wins in the 24 year history under the PL branding.

Current boss Rafa Benitez is sixth in the list with 144 PL wins at Liverpool and Newcastle but there is somebody who is one place higher.

Yes, England supremo and former Newcastle (and Sunderland, West Ham and Bolton) boss Sam Allardyce is fifth in the list with 156.

Can you think of the five other Newcastle managers in the Top 20?

Obviously a lot of it is to do with how many seasons spent in the top flight, rather than an actual high win percentage.

With four former Sunderland managers featuring in the Top 10 (of this Top 20) it does make you wonder where it all went wrong for north east football…
