Gini Wijnaldum is expected at Anfield for a medical according to new reports on Monday lunchtime.
According to the Shields Gazette, they say their information is that the player has chosen Liverpool as his next club and is expected imminently for his medical ahead of a transfer,
After 11 goals and five assists in his first Premier League season, Wijnaldum has been one of the players expected to leave St James Park.
Refusing to confirm he was staying at Newcastle in various interviews, the former PSV Captain has been valued at up to £27m with clubs including Tottenham and Liverpool claimed to be interested in signing him, as well as a number of other overseas clubs.
After a flurry of five incoming transfers who all took part in the past week’s training camp in County Kildare, things had calmed down whilst the club were away in Ireland. Wijnaldum was one of six goalscorers in NUFC’s 6-0 win over Bohemian FC on Saturday (watch the goals here).
Rafa Benitez has stated he is desperate for another centre-back and there have been a number of rejected bids for Blackburn’s Grant Hanley.
The Newcastle boss has also indicated that he expects other players to leave and some to arrive, with the two things connected, as he already has a squad that is relatively big in terms of quantity.
Wijnaldum and/or Sissoko’s departure would surprise nobody but with only 18 days until the Championship kicks off, the quicker it is sorted the better so Rafa Benitez can then bring in other players who want to be here.
As for the Shields Gazette’s claims of an imminent Liverpool deal for Wijnaldum, we should find out very soon whether it has any substance.
