It was Doncaster Rovers 2 Newcastle United 2, although the match has now been overshadowed by the news that Newcastle have agreed to sell Gini Wijnaldum to Liverpool for £25m.

However, when Rafa Benitez is reviewing this match (watch the goals below), he will be having nightmares if he sees any repeat of the defending once the Championship kicks off.

The first goal is simply an embarrassing mistake by Matz Sels, far too laidback in dealing with a backpass and when trying to be too clever ends up giving away a penalty. Best to do this in a friendly and hopefully he has now learnt his lesson!

When Newcastle went two down on the stroke of half-time, surely there has never ever been a more woeful attempt at defending a set-piece than this.

Watch for yourself as two Doncaster players have free headers without any Newcastle player in touching distance. The first header no Newcastle player within five yards and then the second Donny player is almost standing on the line when he puts it away unchallenged.

Results don’t matter in friendlies but signs of good organisation and discipline are essential if Newcastle are going to be in the best place possible going into the new season – Grant Hanley may well be the man Rafa Benitez sees as the person to sort that defence.

On a more positive note, Newcastle were better in the second half and Isaac Hayden scored from a corner (always good to see…) whilst Ayoze Perez produced a very skilful finish to save Newcastle from defeat in the final stages.
