Newcastle loan player Liam Smith had to be stretchered off on Friday night.

The young United midfielder went down in pain after being challenged by Bolton’s Alex Samizadeh in the final minute of the pre-season friendly, Smith unable to get back to his feet.

Liam Smith is on a six month loan deal at Crewe Alexandra, the first player Rafa Benitez has allowed to go out on loan this coming season to get some first team football.

The 20 year old played in a 2-0 defeat to Wolves, then the 4-0 win at Nantwich Town on Tuesday.

Last night’s game finished 1-1 against a Bolton eleven but Crewe Manager Steve Davis was more concerned about his young loan star than the result:

“He felt above his ankle, he was in a bit of pain.

“There wasn’t too much swelling so hopefully that’s a good sign.

“He turned away and the lad caught him, whether he’s twisted it or it’s just a knock I don’t know.

“He is in a lot of pain but we will assess him.

“We will see how it is, how it swells and that will give us an indication of whether we need to get it x-rayed.”
