At the moment Florian Thauvin appears to now be in a position familiar to many of Newcastle’s French imports of recent years.
Not wanted on Tyneside but Mike Ashley/Graham Carr’s failed transfer strategy meaning too much was laid out on him, especially in terms of wages, to allow a French club that matches his quality to be able to afford him.
Only PSG would be able to comfortably match the winger’s wages and allow Newcastle to recoup most of the £14m or so transfer fee they laid out – but that isn’t going to happen.
Instead it is only a club such as financially embarrassed Marseille who still want the player – but can only afford a loan, without even being able to offer a guaranteed permanent deal at the end of it.
Nevertheless, in France today there are reports that pressure is being piled on Florian Thauvin to return to Provence, with Marseille being the biggest city there.
Speaking to Le Phoceen, L’Equipe Mathieu Gregoire has said that his information is that Charlotte Pirroni, girlfriend of Florian Thauvin, is pushing her boyfriend to return to the area (Provence).
The journalist suggesting that Thauvin’s partner is not enjoying life on Tyneside.
Gregoire also saying that Florian Thauvin is desperate to play for Marseille again as it is a club he enjoyed being at and also one that he is desperate to prove himself for.
In pre-season, Thauvin hasn’t started any of the three friendlies yet but has had time in each one as a substitute – a pattern that appears to suggest Rafa Benitez doesn’t see him being in his first team plans but wants to keep him fit and in the shop window to try and attract a buyer.
