Rafa Benitez isn’t hanging about, with Jesus Gamez due to fly into Newcastle for his medical.
Sky Sports report that the Atletico defender is expected at Newcastle Airport this (Thursday) afternoon, their man in the north east Keith Downie confirming the 31 year old full-back is set to arrive in time to be part of the pre-season training camp.
Newcastle head off to County Kildare this weekend for a week of work, culminating in a friendly against Bohemian on Saturday 16 July, by which time the first Championship game at Fulham will be only 20 days away (Friday 5 August).
Jesus Gamez is surplus to requirements with the 18m euros signing of Sime Vrsaljko for Atletico Madrid.
The 31 year old Jesus Gamez spent his entire career at Malaga before being bought in by Atletico two years ago, mainly as cover for Juanfran, the first choice right-back.
Making 37 appearances (19 starts in La Liga) in two seasons, Gamez has also filled in at left-back, but now Atletico are needing a clearout as they have 37 senior players and only 25 places to go around.
AS Sport in Spain first reported on Wednesday morning the likely move to Newcastle, saying that they understood Rafa Benitez was keen on Jesus Gamez to be part of his promotion drive and that the player knows that he must move on now as there is no place in the Atletico squad anymore.
With Newcastle now having lost three defenders in the last six months, as Coloccini joins Williamson and Taylor in exiting St James Park, Newcastle are very thin on the ground in defence.
Many fans still expect Daryl Janmaat to leave, whilst left-back has been a problem for years, with neither Haidara or Dummett ever fully convincing fans that they are the answer.
