Heartbreak for Newcastle young star as England exit in Euros semi-final

The dream is over for young Newcastle star Freddie Woodman.

England have exited at the semi final stage of the Under 19s European Championships in Germany.

The Young Lions going down 2-1 to Italy after winning all three group games.

England started their finals with a 2-1 win over France, before going on to beat both Holland and Croatia by the same scoreline.

Freddie Woodman was one of only two players to start all four games, Josh Onomah being the other.

By reaching the last four, England have at least qualified for the Under 20 World Cup next year, although they will be gutted not to have been able to follow up the Under 17s European Championships success two years ago, when both Woodman and Adam Armstrong played leading roles.

Today’s semi final saw Federico Dimarco score both goals for Italy, the first a penalty, Freddie Woodman having little chance with either.

There was some late hope in the final stages when an Italian own goal gave England a small lifeline but they weren’t able to tie the match.

England U19 starting 11 v Italy:

Freddie Woodman (Newcastle United), Jonjoe Kenny, Jordan Rossiter, Tammy Abraham, Joshua Onomah, Dominic Solanke, Izzy Brown, Kyle Walker-Peters, Fikayo Tomori, Reece Oxford, Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Final Score: Italy 2 England 1
