With all the speculation surrounding Moussa Sissoko and Newcastle’s £35m valuation, we asked fans a slightly different question.

Rather than whether our ‘star’ midfielder is worth that amount, the question we posed was would you take £35m for  all of the remaining French players at St James Park?

Thankfully both Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan came to the end of their five year contracts in June, which leaves us with Moussa Sissoko (three years), Florian Thauvin (four years), Emmanuel Riviere (four years), Yoan Gouffran (one year) and Massadio Haidara (two years).

(The figures in brackets is how long they have remaining on their Newcastle contracts)

Thanks to everybody who voted and we can reveal that the Newcastle fans voted:

69% Yes would take £35m for Sissoko, Thauvin, Haidara, Gouffran and Riviere

31% No, the remaining French players at Newcastle are worth more than £35m

Whatever happens (claims last night that Borussia Dortmund are close to landing Sissoko), thankfully the days are well in the past of letting Graham Carr loose with the NUFC cheque book where French players are concerned, a ‘plan’ which proved to be an unmitigated disaster that played a major part in Newcastle’s second relegation in the last seven years under Mike Ashley.

Whilst they still have to do it on the pitch, Rafa Benitez is using his expertise and the freedom Ashley was forced to give him, to bring in players from wherever he chooses (Belgium, Spain…even England!), with no daft rigid guidelines on age/experience either – so signings have ranged from 21 year old Isaac Hayden to 31 Jesus Gamez.

Bringing in players to do specific jobs based on ability, whatever next?!!
