Blackburn legend Simon Garner thinks Newcastle United have got a bargain in Grant Hanley.

The former Rovers striker thinks that Rafa’s persistence has landed the defender for at least a couple of million under his true worth.

He says that Grant Hanley’s presence will be missed as he was Blackburn’s Captain and leader, with Newcastle fans wondering if he will be given the same role(s) at St James Park.

Whilst thinking the transfer fee should have been higher, Garner doesn’t blame the 24 year old for deciding to jump ship to Tyneside.

Describing Newcastle as a Premier League club in all but name, he also thinks the pull of playing in front of fifty thousand people is a big lure for Grant Hanley.

Simon Garner writing for the Lancashire Telegraph:

“It is a big loss to the club because Grant was the captain, the leader, and they’ll miss him.

“You could say the £5.5m fee looks a bit low, and you would hope there might be add-ons included in the deal.

“I would be looking for around £8million for him in today’s market, especially from a club like Newcastle who have got the money to throw around with parachute payments.

“You can’t blame the lad for wanting to go to a big club like that. They’re set up to be a Premier League club, they have full houses every week and the fans are fanatical.”
