Andros Townsend has declared that it was a ‘pretty easy decision to choose Crystal Palace’, the England international pointing to the use of wingers at Selhurst Park to explain his choice.

As for Newcastle United, Townsend reckons that it was an ‘extremely difficult decision’ to jump ship from the relegated club, with it supposedly taking him a month to decide to do it.

There were widespread reports that the Andros Townsend decision to join Alan Pardew, was triggered by the fact that Liverpool eventually signed Sadio Mane, rather than following up their claimed interest in the then Newcastle winger.

However, surely the decision to leave Tyneside this summer was taken back in January, when Andros Townsend insisted on an exit clause if Newcastle were relegated.

Leaving aside the fact he has deserted Newcastle after only 12 starts and any feeling United fans may have about him joining a certain Alan Pardew…

Maybe the most puzzling this is why Townsend has settled for a move to Crystal Palace so early in the transfer window.

Based on the performances we saw in black and white, Andros Townsend looked like a player who could play in the upper reaches of the Premier League and get back into the England set-up.

The fact he hasn’t waited to see if any more attractive propositions came along, makes me think he maybe is a player who fancies a more laidback career, rather than pushing to see just how good he could be – a bit like any number of Newcastle players we have seen in recent seasons.

Maybe the signs were there when he stayed at Tottenham despite not playing a full 90 minutes of Premier League football in two years and now he has returned to London at the very first opportunity, maybe not caring which club it was just so long as he was returning to his home patch.

A big mistake if this is the case because he has already wasted so many years, turning 25 in 11 days time, Andros Townsend has only started 46 Premier League matches in his entire career.

As has been said before, it will be interesting to see in 12 months time just what kind of situation Andros Townsend and Newcastle United are in.

Andros Townsend speaking to the Crystal Palace official website:

“I had known of the interest for a couple of weeks.

It was an extremely difficult decision to leave Newcastle and it took me about a month or so – but when I decided that I wanted to go, it was about finding the best opportunity for me at this stage of my career.

“It was a pretty easy decision to choose Crystal Palace because of the direction they are heading.

“They play a system that suits wingers and you only need to look at Wilfried Zaha, Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon to see how they’ve excelled and how influential they are for Palace.

“I want to be part of that and help this club reach its potential.”
