For most fans, the day that Alan Shearer signed for Newcastle United will have few equals.

I remember coming out of where I worked at the time in Gateshead and seeing the Chronicle billboard, I was straight into the newsagents to join the queue.

It seems like forever ago, both Newcastle signing a player of that calibre, for a world record fee, and the fact that it was a paper copy of the Chronicle that was the way so many (most?) supporters found out about it.

The only rival for me would be when I heard Kevin Keegan had signed for Newcastle as a player (closely followed by when he came back as Manager!).

The difference back in 1982 (and 1992!) was that Newcastle were at such a low ebb, whereas when Alan Shearer signed, we were at a modern day all-time high having just been pipped by Manchester United for the title – and surely Alan Shearer was that last missing piece of the jigsaw…

Obviously it didn’t quite work out like that but what a 10 years and what about the 206 goals?!!!

Luckily, Alan Shearer feels the same way and still describes it as his ‘biggest and best career decision’.

I can’t disagree with that.
