News on Wednesday morning that Alan Pardew is set to make a move for one of his former Newcastle stars, Tim Krul.

This isn’t the first time that this link has been made but current circumstances possibly make it a more credible story.

In South London, the Croydon Advertiser report that Crystal Palace are going to move for Tim Krul because they fully expect current number one Wayne Hennessey to make a move of his own, after competing in this summer’s Euros.

Everton are said to be the most likely destination with the scousers now desperate for a new number one of their own.

Tim Krul is expected to be fit to play again after long-term injury when the new season kicks off and the media report claims that Alan Pardew would look to retain Alex McCarthy as cover if the Newcastle keeper signs. Veteran 37 year old Julian Speroni is expected to provide further cover by staying for one more year at Selhurst Park.

After being unrivalled for the number one shirt at St James Park, Tim Krul is now suddenly faced by challenges from Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow, both of whom having done well in the Dutch keeper’s absence.

With 66 days left until the Championship kicks off, there is still no mention of any new deal in the offing for Tim Krul, with the Newcastle keeper now set to move into the final season of his contract on Tyneside.

It would seem inconceivable that Newcastle would allow the status quo to remain and so we have to expect either a new contract to be signed or else one of Newcastle’s longest serving players to eventually make the break.

Whilst Rafa Benitez has been assured of a certain transfer budget, any money raised will also be made available to him.

A combination of adequate replacements (plus Freddie Woodman making great progress) and Tim Krul potentially still commanding a decent fee, could see an interesting decision set to be taken by Rafa Benitez – whether the reported Alan Pardew interest is genuine or not.
