The last four years have been a mixed bag for Papiss Cisse but when it comes to one area of the game, the Senegalese striker can ALWAYS be relied upon.

The Newcastle striker only started 14 Premier League matches last season but despite this, easily made it into the top 20 most caught offside players.

In fact, only 15 other attacking players saw the offside flag raised more than Papiss Cisse.

After a magnificent opening three months at St James Park when scoring 13 goals in 13 starts (plus 1 as sub), Cisse has since then managed only another 24 PL strikes in four years, whilst at the same time totally failing to come to terms with the offside rule.

Last season’s 19 offsides for Papiss Cisse came in only 14 Premier League starts plus 7 as sub, a total of 1071 minutes on the pitch working out at an offside every 56 minutes. All of that for only three goals – not the greatest if returns.

Interestingly, Jermaine Defoe is right at the top with 43 offside, he started 28 PL games (plus 5 as sub) and scored 15 goals, whilst his offsides came at a rate of one every 59 minutes.

Not the greatest fan of Defoe but he is what he is, a goal poacher who plays on the shoulder of the last defender and looking to be set away with a through ball.

Whereas what makes Papiss Cisse extra irritating is the fact that he isn’t even that type of striker and certainly these days, there is no hope/expectation of him sprinting away from Premier League defences.

As for Championship ones…Cisse has already stated he is not moving anywhere and sadly with one year of his contract remaining he is in a strong position.

It is surely unimaginable that Newcastle could go into next season with him as first choice and so it looks very much like Newcastle United would have to bite the bullet financially. Needing to do a deal to help persuade Papiss Cisse to move on and allow them to replace him with an effective striker who can score goals…and understands the offside rule.
