Newcastle United have made an approach for Eran Zahavi according to reports on Thursday night.

Zahavi tends to play as a second striker/number 10 and has a phenomenal record in domestic football.

The last three and a half seasons at Maccabi Tel Aviv, Eran Zahavi has scored 125 goals in 153 starts (all competitions, including Champions League), pus 13 as a sub.

This followed an ill fated attempt at making it in Italy, the Israeli international moving for just over £1m from Hapoel Tel Aviv but in his 18 months at Palermo the striker/attacking midfielder scored only two goals.

The Sun report that their information is that Rafa Benitez has inquired whether the player would be interested in a move to Tyneside, whilst Ajax and clubs from China are also believed to be interested.

As well as being Maccabi Tel Aviv’s main goalscorer, Eran Zahavi is also their Captain, turning 29 this coming July he has proved a bargain signing at around £200,000 when Palermo allowed him to return to Israel in a cut price deal in January 2013.

Whether he could adapt to playing in England/The Championship would obviously be a gamble and there are obvious parallels with Seydou Doumbia who scores for fun in Russia and Switzerland but hasn’t managed to repeat that in England or Italy.
