Many Newcastle fans are set to keep an eye out for how John Carver gets on in his first job since being sacked at Newcastle a year ago.

Recently appointed to manage AC Omonoia Nicosia, John Carver is now set to make his first signing for the club.

One-time Premier League striker Matt Derbyshire has arrived in Cyprus and with terms agreed, the club’s official website says they are now just waiting for his medical to go through.

Derbyshire looked a real prospect around 10 years ago when bursting through into the first team at then Premier League club Blackburn Rovers, though it didn’t quite happen for him as he became a regular substitute rather than starter.

The language shouldn’t be too much of a barrier with the striker having spent two years at Greek side Olympiakos after leaving Blackburn.

Since arriving back in England, Matt Derbyshire has played in the lower leagues for clubs such as Nottingham Forest, Oldham, Blackpool and most recently, Rotherham.

Out of contract there, he has decided to join John Carver rather than agree another deal with the Championship club.

Whilst Newcastle prepare for second tier football, John Carver has Europa League matches to look forward to in advance of the league season kicking off in Cyprus.
