Gateshead have confirmed that they’ve made a move to recruit Shola Ameobi.

The former Newcastle striker was one of 14 players released by Fleetwood Town this week.

Shola played the second half of the season at the League One side and helped them succeed in avoiding relegation to the fourth tier.

Since leaving Newcastle, Shola Ameobi has had spells at Gaziantep (Turkish second tier), Crystal Palace and Bolton, as well as his time at Fleetwood.

Gateshead’s Chairman has revealed the club’s interest in the forward and whilst manager Neil Aspin is away on holiday at the moment, he has backed the move for Ameobi.

Gateshead Chairman Richard Bennett:

“Shola Ameobi is certainly a player who we would like to bring to Gateshead.

“He has had a great career and still has plenty to offer.

“We have put a call in to his agent and, hopefully, we will get the chance to speak to him, though there is bound to be interest from elsewhere.

“It shows the ambition of the club that we are in for a player of Ameobi’s calibre and we’re determined to mount a promotion challenge.”
