Florian Thauvin has been interviewed in France, the Newcastle winger talking about this past season and his future.

Talking about his personality, this will make a number of Newcastle fans smile when comparing it to the little that they saw from the player – “I am very demanding of myself. I always give 100%. I’m never satisfied…”

As to the future, Florian Thauvin says that his agent is speaking to several clubs but for now he is still a Newcastle player.

The French winger says that a legendary club such as Newcastle United didn’t deserve to be relegated and that it hurt him when United dropped into the Championship.

Thauvin admits that Marseille would like to loan him once again but it looks unlikely Newcastle would allow that, with the preference being to recoup as much money as possible this summer.

Recent days have seen claims that as and when Marcelo Bielsa is appointed at Lazio, he will make Florian Thauvin his first signing, the pair having been together at Marseille in 2014/15. However, Thauvin says it is ‘premature’ to talk about that possibility just yet.

Florian Thauvin talking to La Provence:

What is your assessment of your loan at OM?

“Positive. I came late, on 31 January. It was not simple. I had to blend rapidly into this group…then there was this red card against Montpellier in my first match. I was happy to return to Om, my desire…I needed to find the rhythm and my physical condition. Then everything went better.”

You had come to be revived. Mission accomplished … or not?

“I am very demanding of myself. I always give 100%. I’m never satisfied, my mission could have been more successful. We can always do better. But my goal was to find enjoyment (of playing football) and personally helping OM to get better. I wanted to help the club climb the table and/or go to Coupe de France final. If I’m not mistaken, I scored 4 goals in thirteen games. It is not enough, but it’s interesting. With a little more luck, the statistics would have been better.

If I had to take a little satisfaction it is the support, they (Marseille fans) elected me twice player of the month. They know that this shirt means a lot to me. I was touched by their support at the end of the season.

“I worked hard for OM. I lived and I saw a love affair with the club. As in any love story, there are ups and downs! I do not always show my feelings, but deep down it boils. When you lose, I’m horrible with my family. I’m not talking, I remain in my thoughts. I do not get out much. I prefer to stay at home with my family. When I make a bad game, it can hurt me a few days. When you play for a big club like OM, we have some responsibility.”

And now? Newcastle have been relegated, will you stay and play in the English Division Two?

“My agent has had discussions with the club and continues to have. Newcastle were always professional with me. This is a legendary club in England who did not deserve to go down. I thought about my teammates and fans after relegation. This hurt too. I know what I want. We continue to discuss with the club, but this must remain between us. I greatly respect Newcastle and its leaders so won’t speak publicly on the situation.

OM would keep you for another season. Sound good?

“I know that OM thinks that. I have said again and again, Marseille will be special in my life, this club has a lot. Obviously, we cannot remain indifferent to her interest. This is for OM or Newcastle to communicate on the subject. My agent is in contact with several clubs, that’s not for me to speak of. For now, I am a Newcastle player.”

There is talk of interest from Inter Milan, Lazio…with Bielsa, and Valencia …

“Bielsa is a great coach, he helped me progress, but it is premature for the moment to talk about all that. It’s not for me to do so.”
