Daniel Agger isn’t joining Newcastle United after all…

The former Liverpool centre-back returned to Denmark and Brondby in 2014 but the first big transfer ‘story’ last month, saw Newcastle reported to have approached the Danish international defender to move to Tyneside.

The story ran and ran in the national and local media, the only problem being that the entire story had been fabricated by a Newcastle fan.

United supporter ‘Disguntled Nick’ (@23nsg) had commented about Spanish newspaper Marca reporting that Rafa Benitez had approached Daniel Agger for a reunion at Newcastle.

The media happily repeated this without even bothering to check it out, a glorious reminder of how a lot of journalism works now.

Today though, the BBC now report that Daniel Agger has hung up his boots and ended his playing days, the defender having had two spells at Brondby either side of his days at Liverpool, where Rafa Beniez signed him.

Agger also using his Twitter account to share the news, stating:

“It’s sad, but it is the right decision to stop. I’m proud of my career.”

So Rafa Benitez will have to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements and anybody wanting to trick the media, will also have to choose another target for the next one to sting the press.
