In the opening fortnight of the season, both Huddersfield fans and Reading supporters visit St James Park.

However, the two sets of fans have had vastly different reactions to the announcement of the fixtures.

With 46 games to get through, it means Newcastle already have nine midweek league fixtures and Reading is one of them.

Currently, Huddersfield are at St James Park on Saturday 13 August, with Reading visiting on Wednesday 17 August, four days later.

When the Newcastle United fixtures were released today (see them HERE), we discovered that the first game of the season is at Fulham and it has been pulled back to the Friday (5 August) night with a 7.45pm kick-off for live TV.

We should shortly find out if that Huddersfield home game is going to be moved, whilst even if Reading was chosen it is almost certain not to be moved from the current Wednesday night kick-off.

You do have the feeling that the chance to sample Newcastle’s nightlife is almost as big an attraction to visiting St James Park for many – here are the varying reactions from Huddersfield fans and Reading supporters, via social media and message boards.

Huddersfield Fans

‘WAHEY – Newcastle (A) 13th August, can’t wait for that.’

‘Are the tickets out yet? How many will we get? Which pubs are we meeting up in?.. You can stick the greedy premier league right up your arses. The championship is far more exciting, with the added bonus of winning a few games along the way..’

‘Cracking first away games #htafc fans !!! Might be a good time to be playing them.’

‘First fixture I was looking for, I already don’t give a sh*t about the result, just the night out after.’

‘Newcastle away second game of the season, weekend in Newcastle it is…’

‘14 flights of stairs!!! Away fans are housed on the very far side of the Sir John Hall Stand, in the top tier. Up to 3,000 supporters can be accommodated in this section for league games and a larger allocation is available for cup games.

Be warned though that it is a climb of 14 flights of stairs up to the away section and that you are situated quite far away from the pitch. So if you are scared of heights or have poor eyesight then this may not be for you. On the plus side you do get a wonderful view of the whole stadium, plus the Newcastle skyline and countryside in the distance…’

‘Newcastle and Aston Villa first Huddersfield away games. Time to hand in my notice at work!’

Reading supporters

‘Newcastle away Weds august 17th …b*ll*x’

‘Gutted about that Newcastle date.’

‘It’s a shame that Newcastle is midweek but then it seems like most of our ‘interesting’ away games fail to be on a Saturday.’

‘So gutted about the Newcastle away date was really looking forward to that.’

‘Newcastle away August 17. I’m happy with that – why fans moaning?’

‘Cos its a game everyone would want to go to, and its miles away, on a weeknight, pretty simple really.’

‘Easy, book time off work now, go to the match, 5 day bender in Newcastle, sorted.’

‘Newcastle away on a Wednesday 6 weeks into a new job might be a struggle…’

Devastated that Newcastle away is on a Wednesday and when I’m on holiday. Had so much planned…’

‘Got to love EPL computer – Newcastle home and away midweek. Good for fans travelling – not.’

‘Newcastle away on my birthday sounds very cheeky.’
