AS Nancy have made contact with Newcastle as they are interested in taking Emmanuel Riviere back to France, according to reports on Saturday from Foot Mercato.

The striker has been a disaster after Newcastle gambled £6m on a forward who had only once scored double figures (10 in 2013/14) in Ligue 1.

A lack of goals almost cost Newcastle their Premier League place the following season and then in 2015/16 the club has taken the drop, with Emmanuel Riviere managing only one Premier League goal in two seasons.

AS Nancy (where Newcastle bought Massadio Haidara from) ended last season as Champions of Ligue 2 and are looking to strengthen their squad with the return to Ligue 1.

Fingers crossed that a deal can be made as Emmanuel Riviere has all the hallmarks of another disastrous Graham Carr signing. A player not good enough to play in England, a ridiculously long contract (six years) and on wages that no potential French club would come close to matching.

Newcastle need to cut their losses and move out the likes of Riviere, Gouffran and other players not up to the job, hopefully with Rafa Benitez in charge of transfer decisions he will have the freedom to get a deal done that can see player and club go their separate ways.
