Rafa Benitez is in danger of losing Chancel Mbemba according to reports this morning.

Serie A club Fiorentina are keen to add the DR Congo defender to their team as they try to bridge the gap between this past season’s Europa League qualification (they ended up fifth in Serie A) and making it into the Champions League.

Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio is the one who has reported the potential transfer in Italy and unlike most of the other media over there, he has a very good strike rate in breaking stories concerning English clubs.

Most recently, Di Marzio was the one who broke the news that Rafa Benitez’ assistant at Newcastle, Fabio Pecchia, was set to take over as Manager of Verona.

As we know, Rafa Benitez has made it clear that he is under no obligation to sell any player but it is only as and when offers are actually made, that he will have to make a judgement on whether to keep a player who is keen to leave.

Unlike Moussa Sissoko with his public statement and Gini Wijnaldum with his evasive answers, there are no outward signs that 21 year old Chancel Mbemba wants to leave.

However, the reality is that Newcastle have ended up in the Championship after the likes of  Mbemba, Mitrovic and Wijnaldum arrived with very different expectations.

Newcastle fans made clear in our recent poll just how highly they rated Chancel Mbemba. When thousands of fans were asked to name 10 outfield players they wanted to stay, Mbemba got 97% support with only Townsend and Lascelles receiving more support (see full list HERE).
