The big transfer speculation on Sunday has been surrounding claims that Rafa Benitez is making moves to buy Matt Ritchie for £10m.
The other part of the story is that Newcastle/Rafa are allegedly preparing the move for the Bournemouth winger under the assumption that Andros Townsend will be moving back to the Premier League, rather than sticking with Newcastle in the Championship.
The Scottish international got his first chance of Premier League football last season, having a decent season with four goals in 37 appearances (four of them as a sub).
However, in the previous two seasons for the Cherries in the Championship Matt Ritchie was devastating, as well as numerous assists he scored 24 goals in 72 starts (plus four as a sub).
A popular subject amongst Newcastle fans has been speculating as to whether Premier League players would be prepared to step down to the Championship and move to Tyneside.
Here we have searched the various Bournemouth fans message boards and websites for their reaction to the Matt Ritchie speculation:
‘Poses the question, would you swap for Townsend?’
‘No, this is a big season for Ritchie. I think now he has learned what’s expected he could be a massive part of our armoury.
Andros Townsend is better going forward at the moment but not as good for the overall team in my opinion.
As others have said, it’s laughable to think Matt will drop to the championship. Shows the Newcastle mentality if true…’
‘I can’t see Ritchie agreeing to drop down a league.’
‘Why would he go down a division? Why do we want to offload him?’
‘Ritchie’s agent is clearly up to something. This is a weekly link elsewhere at the moment.’
‘Indeed. His agent is being busy – guess it all comes to down to was he instructed to be by Ritchie himself ?’
‘That would be some commute from Gosport each day.’
‘Probably heard someone say it was near Gosforth and misunderstood the accent.’
‘Don’t understand this possible move at all.
Would be a step down for Matt, though he did go off the boil last season so maybe he feels the prem is too much for him week in week out. Or is it his agent eyeing up his share of commission on a move for higher wages?
I wouldn’t necessarily be against Townsend coming this way by way of his get out clause, but keeping Matt as well.’
‘Reading between the lines , I think Ritchie has fallen out with Eddie, due to the (opposition to a) West Ham move. Eddie would rather lose him to a championship club and not a premiership rival. I don’t think Townsend will come to us, we are not a big enough club for him.’
