Matz Sels is set to take his medical today and potentially complete his move to Newcastle United before close of business.

The Chronicle report that the goalkeeper has been brought in as Tim Krul is set to move out, with he Dutch keeper having only one year left on his contract.

Southampton and Leicester were also linked with Matz Sels – but the Belgian keeper is set to compete with Karl Darlow for the keeper’s shirt at the start of the season. Rob Elliot not expected to be back until Autumn 2016 at the earliest.

Matz Sels is currently number one at Gent and has been so for the last two seasons but how good is he is.

Belgian media report that a £5m deal has been agreed and the keeper will sign on for five years.

Last season Matz Sels also excelled in the Champions League, playing eight times as he helped Gent get through to a surprise appearance in the knockout stages.

As with all highlights packages from the continent, beware the dodgy music and you take it at face value whether this gives us a decent guide to Matz Sels’ capabilities.

Once observation is that he doesn’t appear to be all that keen on catching the ball, preferring to punch/push the ball away.
