A dramatic day at the Euros on Wednesday ended with a total of seven former Newcastle players making their way to the knockout stages.

A last minute injury time goal from iceland ensuring it was they and not Portugal who will face England.

I was tempted to include Moussa Sissoko to make it eight in this (former NUFC players) category but that would have been a little bit facetious…

So joining CURRENT (for now at least) Newcastle midfielder Sissoko, these are the one-time United players who will stay in France for at least a few more days:

Fraser Forster (England)

James Milner (England)

Tamas Kadar (Hungary)

Aaron Hughes (N Ireland)

Shane Ferguson (N Ireland)

Yohan Cabaye (France)

Shay Given (Ireland)

The ridiculous qualification process which meant four of the six third placed teams also qualified, added an extra layer of excitement/confusion as to who would go through and also who would play each other, but the final outcome saw this schedule ahead of us:

Sat 25

2pm Switzerland v Poland

5pm Wales v N Ireland

8pm Croatia v Portugal

Sun 26

2pm France v Ireland

5pm Germany v Slovakia

8pm Hungary v Belgium

Mon 27

5pm Italy v Spain

8pm England v Iceland

I can see some interesting conversations looming in many households with three solid days of football to get through…

Bring it on!
