Two Newcastle players feature in a list of the 20 Premier League stars who had most shots on target last season.

Considering how negatively Steve McClaren set up the team during his 28 matches in charge, it is maybe surprising Newcastle have anybody making the list.

Even more so when you consider Aleksandar Mitrovic started only 22 Premier League games (plus 12 as sub), yet only has 14 players having more strikes on goal.

Mitrovic was on target 29 times last season and scored nine league goals.

Team-mate Gini Wijnaldum had one less effort on target (28) but managed 11 goals from midfield.

You would think that with the benefit of that year’s experience in England, the drop down to the Championship and a more attacking game under Rafa Benitez, then surely there will be many more efforts on target and subsequently goals this coming season – if the pair stay at the club.

Whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic has stated he wants to stay, Gini Wijnaldum has been evasive when asked the questions in interviews.

Both players have been in good form for their countries in recent days, with the pair scoring two goals each in friendlies for Holland and Serbia respectively.
