It should be good news when there’s only one man in Newcastle who thinks that all is well at the club.

The bad news is, that man happens to be the club’s Managing Director Lee Charnley.

It’s on his watch, aided and abetted by Carr and Moncur, that we brought in McClaren, failed to buy a proven goal scorer, failed to rebuild the centre of the defence, and then failed to make the change of manager before it was all too late.

Specialists in failure whose rancid decisions have proved very costly.

This has brought about one of the blackest nights in the club’s recent history. Relegation now confirmed with still one game to go.

Mike Ashley has foisted two demotions on our once proud football club. This latest effort surely way worse. He’s allowed years of shoddy recruitment and penny pinching to build up with no clear strategic planning. Simple things made to look hard, woven in with awful PR.

It will now cost him £100m in lost TV revenue. Ouch. Losing money hurts him the most.

The whole season has been a disaster. The final act with SAFC pipping us has been just a stinger in the tail. The damage was done way before this little run of torture took hold.

The next few weeks have some huge question marks hanging over them.

The future of Benitez?

The future of the club’s board?

Without a major change in approach we’re looking at a hard slog.

All I can say is that for now we’re in a bad place. The Mackems have won the bun fight to reach 17th. They will be having their open top bus no doubt.

Maybe one day in future years we can turn it around and turn the tables on them – but that will depend on what decisions happen at Newcastle United this close season.

Any bets on getting Villa on the opening day?
