What though did the Newcastle supporters make of it?
Below are the ratings as voted by Newcastle fans up to 6pm Sunday.
As you can see, three star men picked out – penalty saver Karl Darlow (9.2), goalscorer Andros Townsend (8.8) and Jamaal Lascelles (8.3) who had a top game at the back.
The supporting roles went to four player who rated 7.0 or better: Chancel Mbemba (7.5), Vurnon Anita (7.4), Jack Colback (7.0) and Cheick Tiote (7.4).
However, once again Papiss Cisse (5.3) struggled to have any influence on the game, closely followed by the recalled Gini Wjnaldum (5.7), the Dutchman having one good effort blocked early in the second half but otherwise anonymous.
Likewise Moussa Sissoko (6.2), not at the level of the last few matches and gave away a really daft penalty that could have been disastrous…
