As well as supplying the winning goal that keeps Newcastle survival hopes alive, Andros Townsend had some interesting stuff to say after the game.

A big topic of conversation at half-time amongst Newcastle fans, was just how much timewasting was going on from the visiting players for the entire first half.

Palace could mathematically still go down but with the bookies pricing that at 150-1 before the match, it clearly isn’t going to happen (they can still go down but it is priced now at 200/1!).

So what was the motivation for the Crystal Palace tactics?

Andros Townsend has claimed that Alan Pardew set his team up ‘from minute one’ to try and relegate his old club.

The United winger adding ‘They were timewasting and didn’t look like they were bothered about a point or three points, they just wanted to relegate us’.

Happily the cunning plan didn’t work and Newcastle aren’t relegated just yet, thanks to the latest wonder goal from Andros Townsend.

He revealed that originally he was going to try and put the ball into the right hand top corner but when Townsend saw how tall the wall was, he quickly changed his mind.

Andros Townsend:

“Originally I was going to put it (goal from free-kick) in the other side but because the wall was so tall – all 6ft players, I thought I have to go the other side and wrongfoot the keeper.

It worked out to perfection and I was delighted.

“I thought they set up to relegate us today from minute one.

“They were timewasting and didn’t look like they were bothered about a point or three points, they just wanted to relegate us.

“A massive relief and we live to fight another day and we are going to work hard next week and prepare for Aston Villa.”
