In a surprise move, former Newcastle player Joey Barton is in talks to join Rangers.
The season just ended saw Barton on top form and helped Burnley to promotion as Champions, the midfielder one of four of their players who were voted by their fellow pros into the PFA Championship team of the season.
However, Joey Barton only had a contract running up until this summer and now has a decision to make.
Sky Sports reporting on Saturday afternoon that Barton is still to agree a new contract with Burnley and has now held talks with Rangers about a potential move north of the border.
It would be a massive coup for Rangers to land somebody of Barton’s calibre and it would certainly be ‘interesting’ seeing him line up in an old firm game next season…
After Newcastle were confirmed as relegated, Joey Barton said ‘Gutted I won’t get the chance to play at St James Park next season’, maybe now he has decided that it won’t be just Newcastle he won’t be playing against in the Premier League.
Barton has now been promoted from the Championship with three different clubs in the seven seasons – Newcastle United, QPR and now Burnley.
Using his Twitter account, Joey Barton had this to say after the Premier League relegation issues were sorted:
“Gutted I won’t get the chance to play at St James’s Park next season. Premier League will be poorer for 50,000+ Geordies every other week.
“Relegation may act as a catalyst at boardroom level. Because they are not currently worthy of being the custodians of such a great club.
“Sad day in the history but they will be back. #ToonArmy
“Great job done by Big Sam and all 5under1and (Not easy for me to say that).”
