Harry Redknapp says that if he was England Manager, there is one Newcastle player who would always be in his squad.

The former Tottenham boss saying that Andros Townsend has been a ‘tremendous signing for Newcastle’.

Harry Redknapp managed the winger when he was at White Hart Lane and gave him his debut in the FA Cup in 2011 as a 19 year old and then a number of other matches in cup football including Tottenham’s Europa League campaign of 2011/12.

However, Townsend played no league football under ‘Arry and went out on loan for regular football, whilst Redknapp was then eventually ‘allowed to leave’ Spurs in June 2012 and player and manager parted company.

Andros Townsend has been in tremendous form since his January move with four goals as well as a number of assists.

Such has been his impact in the recent run that has lifted Newcastle (at least temporarily) out of the relegation zone, that he was one of 12 nominations for the PFA Premier League player of the month for April.

After initial voting, the Newcastle player became one of three potential winners when nine of the 12 were dropped and fans have until 10am this (Friday) morning to register their vote (go HERE to vote).

Harry Redknapp says he is not surprised that Andros Townsend has been nominated and is picking up votes.

Though as always ‘Arry does tend to say anything, no matter how little relation it bears to the facts, Redknapp saying Townsend’s goals ‘have all been vital ones for his team’.

The winger has scored some cracking goals but two of them came in the defeats at Chelsea (5-1) and Southampton (3-1), whilst the Swansea one came in the final minutes with Newcastle already leading 2-0.

Of course not Andros Townsend’s fault that his teammates let him down so badly in those defeats at Southampton and Chelsea, whilst no doubt about the importance of the brilliant winner against Palace.

No doubt if Newcastle stay up, Harry Redknapp will be claiming it was all down to how he developed Townsend at Tottenham but there again, if United do stay up then for once we’ll not mind whatever our old friend ‘Arry is saying.

Harry Redknapp talking to Zapsportz:

“I am not surprised the fans are voting for Andros, he has scored some vital goals for Newcastle lately, he is a match winner as his goals have all been vital ones for his team.

“I felt he was a tremendous signing for Newcastle United and is proving to be just that.

“If you are talking about England, he would always be in my squad.

“He was certainly one of England’s best players a year, 18 months ago, and I’m a big fan of his, for sure. He carries a goal threat, when he runs with the ball and cuts inside.”
