Aston Villa fans are not happy bunnies at the moment.
They appear to be stuck between who they hate the most: their owner, their own players, or Newcastle United and the club’s supporters!
Ever since that fractious relegation day back in 2009 at Villa Park, there has been friction between the two groups of supporters – the bizarre over the top celebrations by the home fans leading to equal amounts of bemusement and anger from the Newcastle supporters who were there.
Reading the comments below, I don’t think they really understand why Newcastle supporters took such exception to what Aston Villa fans did that day.
When Newcastle’s relegation was confirmed at the final whistle, if there had been some on the spot chants/singing of ‘We’ll meet again, don’t know when…’ etc then nobody could have cared a less. Or in fact anything else that was spontaneous….
However, a club 200 miles away and having nothing really to do with each other apart from co-existing in the same division, to then have Aston Villa fans go to so much trouble producing banners and it being so obvious pre-match just how many of the home supporters were desperate for Newcastle to go down, was just basically sad.
Never in a million years would Newcastle fans have done anything similar for a club that means nothing to them.
Maybe some Newcastle fans will produce their own banners in response to what happened seven years ago but the only game in town will be 100% backing for United to get the three points, THEN on the back of that maybe make their feelings known to the home support amongst the usual banks of empty seats at Villa Park.
We searched out the reaction of the Aston Villa fans, via one of their top message boards Villa Talk:
‘Newcastle were relegated at Villa Park in May 2009 and appear to have had a problem with us since then because some of us may have given them a bit too much stick for their liking on that day.
Well we have taken a fair bit of stick this season from visiting fans and the press alike but we seem to have developed thicker skins than they had back then.
This is a “must not lose” game not for the points, or to send our visitors down but to give us a little bit of respect back and to have our visitors planned party plans postponed.’
‘The sadistic schadenfreude of grinding Newcastle’s hopes back a gear or two would be so pleasing.’
‘I bet the players can’t wait to get this last chore over and done with before jetting off to the Caribbean. If you were Rafa Benitez you’d be thanking your lucky stars that you have a game against Villa. This is set up for a thrashing and for revenge to be the word of the day.’
‘I don’t see us getting another point this season, so another three points towards safety for Newcastle. Our only chance is if the Newcastle kit man forgets the players boots and they have to play in slippers, even then I wouldn’t fancy the chances of our defenders keeping a clean sheet.’
‘Andros Townsend to score a hat-trick followed by lots of people angrily saying they’ve always wanted him here.’
‘I really hope the fans let certain players know what we think of them.’
‘Out-banner the bitter and twisted Toon…2009 was such a long time ago, it’s virtually historic. We’ve moved on, so why can’t they? It’s because they’re obsessed.
It’s not as if they didn’t get their revenge earlier is it? August 2010 – 6-0 drubbing at St James Park anyone?’
‘Personally, I hope we create more of a party (away game) atmosphere. F**k it, we’re down, we’re crap, we’ve been let down but we’re still here supporting and having the craic – proclaiming our love for Villa, celebrating a few old players, being defiant with a bit of gallows humour.
That would be more enjoyably and it would be nice to bow out of the league reminding everyone what a great atmosphere Villa Park can be.’
‘Must win game. Send these **** down.’
‘I’ll be coming down for this, my last game was Wycombe away and I had said I wouldn’t be giving the club any more of my money this year but who knows when VP will see another top division fixture so I’m relenting!’
‘I hope the players, bar the youngsters, get the nastiest of abuse for the whole 90 minutes.
I’m not even joking here when I say that what I want to see most from this game, is as many bad injuries as possible to the senior players.’
‘Definitely going to stay away, the temptation to run on the pitch and start attacking some of these players would be too much.’
‘I honestly can’t believe that any Aston Villa fan would even consider going to this. In fact, I find the continued presence of our fans at games is sending out the wrong message to the board and the players.
In addition, being at VP watching the likes of Lescott and Richards trundle around aimlessly, whilst Newcastle potentially secure safety and rub our relegation in our faces is just plain mental and I’d rather stick pins in my eyes. For what it’s worth, I think we will lose. Again.’
‘Inevitable loss. Would be hilarious if we fluked a win but this game has been set up for our humiliation since last June when the fixtures were revealed.’
‘We were going to keep it secret so as not to give the club too much of a heads up but I think a lot of people have guessed the kind of thing we will be doing anyway. We will be releasing 74 beach balls on 74 minutes around the ground and also 2.5k balloons.’
‘If we only manage one more win this season – I would love it to be against Newcastle.’
‘Don’t be silly, as if we’d ever be allowed the last laugh. Embarrassing defeat that results in Newcastle staying up and they all mercilessly take the pi** out of us.
That’s how life goes, we lost the lottery and supported Aston Villa.’
‘I despise the current board, the current players and I also dislike Newcastle. For that reason, I can think of nothing worse than spending my Saturday afternoon watching that game.’
